Dr David Starkey

This promises to be a most stimulating evening with celebrated and sometimes controversial historian, author and broadcaster Dr David Starkey CBE. Starkey will be delving into the interesting connections between the First Duke of Marlborough and Sir Winston Churchill. He will discuss historical perspectives, and the importance of politicians understanding history in order to learn from it. As Churchill himself said ‘In history lies all the secrets of statecraft’.

David Starkey will explore the fascination Winston Churchill had for John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough and the effect that writing the biography of his great ancestor brought upon him. That biography, Marlborough: his Life and Times, was Winston Churchill’s greatest authorial endeavour, being one million words long and ten years in the writing. It was an enterprise which, ultimately, according to Starkey, transformed Churchill into the masterful statesman we know.

David Starkey will welcome questions from the audience so this is sure to be a lively evening of conversation, debate and learning.
